Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in the U.S. state of Florida.[2] It is the eighth-largest natural freshwater lake among the 50 states of the United States and the second-largest natural freshwater lake contained entirely within the contiguous 48 states, after Lake Michigan.[3]
Okeechobee covers 730 square miles (1,900 km2) and is exceptionally shallow for a lake of its size, with an average depth of only 9 feet (2.7 m). It is the largest lake in Florida and the southeastern United States, and is too large to see across.[4] The Kissimmee River, located directly north of Lake Okeechobee, is the lake's primary source.[5
Major sugar cane milling operations near Lake Okeechobee are concentrated in Palm Beach County (specifically Pahokee, Belle Glade, and South Bay) rather than directly in Okeechobee city. Key facilities include the Osceola Sugar Mill in Pahokee and the Okeelanta Corporation mill in South Bay, both operated by Florida Crystals. These mills process sugarcane grown in the organic soils south of the lake, with the industry being a major employer in the region.
