Hirschhorn’s attorney told the Times that "she was not required to pay rent because the city had never approved the unit for occupancy and that its shower was constructed without a permit."

By law, chủ nhà có thể đuổi/evict nếu unit đó kg hợp pháp (kg có permit) aka illegal rental unit nhưng kg được đòi tiền rent, vì hợp đồng đâu có hợp lệ, invalid contract. Người thuê có quyền kiện chủ nhà đòi bồi thường. Trong trường hợp này thì bà thuê nhà nắm được cán là unit của ông bác sĩ kg có permit.
